Plant in Ferrara, Italy

At the beginning of February 2002, the Ferrara plant was officially inaugurated in the presence of Members of the European Parliament, representatives of the European Commission and representatives from local authorities. The Ferrara facility is the first plant of this kind in the world.

The first tons of cable scrap were treated at the beginning of February, only four years after the patent was first applied for.

Having overcome some of the teething problems in 2002-2003 and made several improvements, Vinyloop Ferrara has proved the industrial viability of the process.

Since then production has increased progressively to satisfy the growth in sales. The ambition for 2007 is to treat 10,000 t of waste and sell the extracted PVC compound.
Vinyloop® Ferrara is a partnership between three companies:

  • SolVin Italia is part of the SolVin joint venture (75% Solvay, 25% BASF), one of the largest PVC producers in Europe with the most extensive range of products.
  • Ferrari Textiles is a manufacturer of tarpaulins. In Ferrara, a specific Texyloop pilot unit will be added to the industrial line, in order to separate valuable fibers from the not less valuable regenerated PVC compound. Ferrari textiles will collect and provide the tarpaulins to recycle.

Because it recycles post consumer waste, Vinyloop Ferrara SpA, has received the financial support of Vinyl 2010. Vinyl 2010 takes care of the follow-up of the Voluntary Commitment of the Vinyl Industry to recycle 200.000 tonnes of post consumer waste on top of existing schemes in 1999.
